Female artists, and Mary Jane is a prime example, will generally paint strong women who look right back at you from the painting. There is a real presence, almost a dialogue between the viewer and the subject. Although the sensuality and beauty of the sitter are apparent, they are not the main focus of the painting. When women paint other women, sensuality is the supporting rhythm of the piece, rather than the main melody.
